How to Teach Math Using Shichida’s 65 Day Program

The Shichida’s 65 Day Program is similar to the Doman Method of teaching Math with some differences.

What You Will Need

Although the program is called the 65-day program, it is really 260 days long because you repeat the cycle of 65 days four times. In addition to this Math program, Shichida recommends flashing:

  • Picture dot cards (e.g. apples instead of red dots) to give your child a broader understanding of quantities. Flash 10 cards each time in sequence.
  • Pattern dot cards (organised dots as opposed to the randomly placed red dot cards) to be flashed daily. Flash 10 cards each time in sequence.

You will notice in the outline below that certain equations are missing from the sequence.  I am not sure why that is so but this is exactly what was outlined in the notes.

First Cycle

Day 1: Show red dot cards 1 to 10.

Day 2: Show red dot cards 6 to 15.

Day 3: Show red dot cards 11 to 20.

Day 4: Show red dot cards 16 to 25.

Day 5: Show red dot cards 21 to 30.

Day 6: Show red dot cards 26 to 35.

Day 7: Show red dot cards 31 to 40.

Day 8: Show red dot cards 36 to 45.

Addition

Tell your child: “From today, we begin addition.”

  • Say “one plus three” and flash four dots.

Day 22: 30-1, 30-2, 30-3, 30-5, 30-7, 30-8, 30-11, 30-20, 30-22, 30-29. Follow the manner in which the minus one equations were introduced.

Day 23: 19-6, 20-5, 11-10, 31-9, 25-6, 45-13, 17-11, 12-8, 33-13, 22-6. Follow the manner in which the minus one equations were introduced.

Day 24: 39-27, 12-6, 21-4, 16-9, 41-12, 50-6, 32-18, 28-5, 48-14, 16-7. Follow the manner in which the minus one equations were introduced.

Multiplication

Tell your child: “From today, we begin multiplication.”

Day 25: 2×2, 2×3, 2×4, 2×5, 2×6, 2×7, 2×8, 2×9.

  • Say “two times two” and flash four dots.
  • Say “two times three” and flash six dots.
  • Say “two times four” and flash eight dots.
  • Say “two times five” and flash ten dots.
  • Say “two time six” and flash twelve dots.

Day 55:  Introduce numbers 1 to 15.  Show 1 dot equals “1”, 2 dots equals “2”, 3 dots equals “3”, 4 dots equals “4”, 5 dots equals “5”, etc.

Day 56: Introduce numbers 16 to 30.

Day 57: Introduce numbers 31 to 40.

Day 58: Introduce numbers 41 to 50.

Image Calculation

Day 59: Ask your child to image 1 to 10 in dots.

Day 60: Ask your child to convert the dots to numbers.

  • “There are going to be eight dots in your image – did they appear?”
  • “Now they are going to change into the number 8 – did they change?”

Day 61: Ask your child to image the numerical formula in dots.

Day 62: Play “Which one?” game with dot cards.  For example, Show the child dot cards 44 and 45 and ask “which one is 44?”  This provides your child training to convert 44 dots into the number 44.

Day 63: Play “Which one?” game with dot cards involving numerical formula.  For instance, ask “which one is 58-23?” and show the cards 34 and 35 and have your  child point to the card he thinks is the correct answer.

Day 64: Show your child numerical formulae and get him to convert the formulae into dots.

Day 65: Show the child numerical formulae and have him write down the answers.

Second Cycle

Day 1: Show red dot cards 51 to 60.

Day 2: Show red dot cards 56 to 65.

Day 3: Show red dot cards 61 to 70.

Day 4: Show red dot cards 66 to 75.

Day 5: Show red dot cards 71 to 80.

Day 6: Show red dot cards 76 to 85.

Day 7: Show red dot cards 81 to 90.

    1. Doman was the first to introduce the red dot cards to young children and the recommendation is that it works best with children below 3 years.

        My Son is going to be 3 in March 2020. I just came across RBE and ordered dot cards. Can I still do it? I am little concerned as I feel my son starts counting when I show something.

      2. My understanding is that 3 years old is the cut-off age for Doman Red Dot cards. From a parent’s perspective, I would say go ahead and try it if you would like to because there is nothing to lose. At the very least, you will be building a basic foundation of number sense for your child and that will still be beneficial.

    I have a query in cycle two. Once we finish showing the numbers from 51-100 and we have to repeat steps 10 to 54 do we have to show the same equations from 1 to 50 or similar equations from 51 to 100?

    My daughter is 9.5 months old and she is not interested in. Red dot flash cards at all. She maintains her interest in other flash cards such as animal, flower, words etc. but as soon as we start the red dots, she looks elsewhere. What do you think we are doing wrong? We badly want to teach her Math. Please advise.

    1. Hi Bumana,

      Has your child ever been interested in red dots? Did she watch initially then stop recently? If this is the case, take a break for a couple of months before resuming again. If she never liked red dots, you should try showing something else instead of red dots. If there is something your child likes to look at, try using that as the image in place of the dots. For instance, if she likes flowers, use flowers instead of red dots. You can also try arranging the flowers in shapes or patterns, like the outline of a heart or star. See if that helps.

  4. Hi dr…My child is 13 mths old. We are abt to finish doman dot cards digitally. Is it necessary to introduce abstract numbers nw….shall i start shichida method by following the available ppt in this website. It includes dots, apples ,and pattern in same ppt ..I m confused whether to show all the three at a time. In description you have mentioned to show picture and pattern cards in sequence daily along with the program. It means i have to show random and pattern dot daily eg. even after day 10 in first cycle. kindly clarify abt frequency per day. Is it nt necessary to shuffle the slides like doman method. Then clarify this (organised dots as opposed to the randomly placed red dot cards) whether i have to arrange slides like this eg. 1st slide random and followed by organised dots ….kindly clarif

    1. In the Doman program, abstract numbers are also taught. It comes with the Dot cards. There is not a lot said in the instructions, but my understanding is that the abstract numbers come after the dot program has been completed.

      The Shichida Program states to show dots, (pictures), and pattern. They are meant to be done together. I used apples, but it can really be any picture – flowers, cars – it’s up to you. Preferably something your child likes. I have created the digital cards in the format that it is supposed to be shown according to Shichida’s 65-day program. Patterns and picture cards are shown when the dots number sequences are shown, e.g. one dot, two dots, three dots. When showing dot equations, it’s just shown with red dots (Shichida did not instruct to show equations with patterns or pictures). Although you could do it if you wanted to. I don’t see a reason why not.

    1. Shichida’s frequency is once a day. Doman’s frequency is 3 times a day. Personally, I think 3 times a day is too many and the children get bored.

      The PPT are organised as they are meant to be used. When there are dots, pictures and patterns included together, they are meant to be shown in the same sitting.

  6. Hi, first of all thank you for all this tremendous amount of work you done.
    On day 55 then you start introducing numbers you do it by showing 3 cards like show the one dot card, show equals card and then show number one card and you name each one as you show them?
    And in the second cycle when you repeat the days 10-54, you basically make up all new substructions, divisions and etc. but with the numbers form 51- 100 that you just introduced, or you repeat those 10 -54 days exactly as they are with all the same equations?
    When you get to cycle 3 and 4 you just repeat everything all over again from the start with reintroducing red dots, then equations and so on?
    As for the showing of picture dot cards and pattern dot cards, do you show first 1- 10 red dot cards, then 1-10 picture cards and then 1-10 pattern cards or you show 1 red dot card followed by 1 picture card and 1 pattern card and then you show each of card 2, 3 and so on?

    1. Hi Anastasia. Shichida doesn’t show the math signs so when you tell your child 1 dot equals 1, you will show the one dot flashcard and say “one dot equals” then show the number one flashcard and say “one”.

      In Shichida’s instructions, he says only Days 1 to 9 is different between the cycles, but the rest is the same. So you should not have to introduce new equations – just repeat the same ones.

      Yes. Cycles 3 and 4 repeat everything all over again from the beginning.

      For the picture or pattern dots, show them after you have completed the dots from 1 to 10, then picture from 1 to 10, then patterned from 1 to 10.
